Why is God called God?
By Baldmichael Theresoluteprotector’sson
I have done a post on the names of God from the bible and also looked briefly at the word ‘God’ itself, but I noticed something recently which made me smile. It also spoke a truth so I thought I would share it plus a few other things.
Trinity
The word God has three letters and in lower case god indicates to me the following:
g – the Son, Jesus, who came to earth (‘g’ as in geo), the tail of the ‘g’ is down as into the ground. Jesus sounds like Gee-sus.
o – the Holy Spirit, the ring, the bond of love, the circle of life, a life giving spirit. O is like a hole so Hole-y spirit.
d – the Father, in heaven hence tail of the ‘d’ up as into heaven. D for daddy.
Action
God anagrams to ‘go’ and ‘do’, God is active, creative.
Mathematics
From the position in the English alphabet we have the numbers 7+16+4 = 26.
26 happens to be the number of letters in the English alphabet.
It breaks down into 2 x 13. 13 is a prime number so 2 primes.
This is like the Father and Son.
The Father is prime as ‘In him we live and move and have our being’, there is no other.
The Son is prime as he is the only begotten Son of God.
Seven
7 a prime number and is the number of completion as by the seventh day of creation God had completed his work.
The number is associated with the Son as ‘All things were created through Him and for Him’.
Seven is a one word anagram of ‘evens’ so balanced. It can also be ‘see NV’, the Son was seen on earth.
Sixteen
16 is the square of 4, i.e. 4 x 4, as well as 24, and is only number that can be both the perimeter and area of the same square, due to 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 being the same as 4 x 4.
It is therefore stable and, as is written in 1 Corinthians 13 v.8 (note 13 and 8), ‘Love never fails.’
And the phrase ‘Love never fails’ is the last and sixteenth item in the preceding list.
And note the last verse of chapter 13 is verse 13 where the greatest thing is love.
16 is also 8 x 2, 8 being the atomic mass of oxygen represented as the symbol ‘O’.
But it is typically as a diatomic gas, a two atom molecule, symbol O2, with an atomic weight of very close to 16.
All mankind needs oxygen, all mankind therefore needs love.
Sixteen is an anagram of various things including ‘I sent ex’, the Holy Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness for example.
Four
It is a square number, 2 x 2, and happens to have four letters. 2 + 2 also equals 4 so it has balance and stability.
The number was originally represented as 4 lines simplified into a cross, X.
And of course the first letter used in the Hebrew of Genesis 1 is an aleph, א, (a form of cross), as a number ‘1’ starting the first line of the first verse.
See my post ‘In the beginning was an ‘X’ etc.’ Link again at the end.
https://alphaandomegacloud.wordpress.com/2025/02/12/in-the-beginning-was-an-x-etc/
The aleph is also the first Hebrew letter for the name translated God, אֱלֹהִים ‘aleim’ or ‘elohim’. Hebrew reads from right to left.
So the cross is implied in the number and is also indicative of four limbs of mankind, 2 arms and 2 legs, 2 x 2.
Four contains the anagrams ‘our’, hence ‘Our Father who is in heaven’.
‘UFO’ as in Unidentified Flying Object, hence Jesus was needed to be seen on earth to show us the Father “He who has seen me has seen the Father”.
‘For’ and with the ‘u’ sounds like ‘for you’, God the Father is for us; he would not have sent his Son if he was not.
Sounds
The word God can be considered as G-od.
Od sounds like ‘odd’ as in the opposite of even.
There are odd and even numbers, the first of which is ‘one’.
And it is written in the Bible that God is one. Thus
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One.”
The word for ‘one’ in Hebrew is אֶחָֽד, echad.
Echad will anagram to the one word ‘ached’ which means among other things ‘longing’.
And God is longing for a relationship with mankind, his creation. Thus in the beginning, in Genesis, we have written
“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

We can glean more from ‘echad’ as it includes the anagram ‘head ‘.
God is the head of his creation, the one in control as we exist in his mind. As is written
“God intended that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. ‘For in Him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are His offspring.’”
And of course Jesus Christ is the head of the church, his body.
Summary and final thoughts
So there you have some thoughts, God is G-od, the G odd, the singular one, the unique one, the first.
As to whether God is odd as in strange, well people have talked about his mysterious ways. He doesn’t think like us so as is written in Isaiah
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD.
And here are some further thoughts on the way God works.
https://biblehub.com/q/meaning_of_’god_works_mysteriously’.htm
Of course the whole point of God being odd is to make us wonder, wonder at his creation, wonder at what is happening in the world, wonder who he is and what he is really like.
Which is the whole point of life to spend it seeking out the whys and wherefores of God.
And that leads me to the observation that YHWH, the name given as a name of God in chapter 2 of Genesis and usually translated ‘Lord’, contains the anagram ‘why’.
So as a whole it could be ‘why h’, a question.
‘h’ is pronounced ‘aitch’, plural ‘aitches’. Aitch anagrams to ‘a itch’, not good English but an itch can be a desire or a longing.
From ‘aitches’ we can get ‘it aches’ which brings us back to ‘echad’ meaning ‘one’ in Hebrew, back to the one God.
And why God is called God.
P.S. here are a few posts which may be of use.
In the beginning was an ‘X’ etc.
From my WordPress site.
Baldmichael Theresoluteprotector’sson. When not posting pages or paging posties, trying to be a good husband, and getting over a long term health issue, I am putting the world to rights. I have nothing better to do, so why not? But of course that includes dancing, being funny (in more than one sense), poking fun at life, poking fun at myself, deflating the pompous, reflating the sad. Seeking to heal the whole of the soul (and body where possible). In short making life as good as it possibly can be for others as well as myself. You can’t say fairer than that. But if you can, please say. People need to know.

Why God is called God?
Probably because ‘Dave’ didn’t sound majestic enough for the creator of the universe.
I mean, imagine the prayers otherwise: ‘Oh Dave almighty, hear our plea.’
It just doesn’t quite thunder across the heavens…
The Lord God reveals Himself to us in many ways.
Seems to me you have demonstrated one of the ways He has done so !!!
